Successful writing
Hello everyone,
Today I would like to tell about my impressions and reflections about Oxford webinar I attended the other day. It was devoted to preparing students for successful writing. I should say it was quite a relief to learn I’m on a right way. Most of us get disappointed with the number of grammar mistakes our kids make while writing essays. But the fact is, and it is really so, students may lose only 3 points out of many for poor Grammar.
It is much more important to teach them the structure of the written paper and provide with necessary linking words and clichés.
Vocabulary is of great importance as well. The lack of words to express thoughts and ideas is often to blame for low marks. So, it’s better to work on writing skills systematically and give students the examples of all kinds of essays to make them feel confident during the exam.
Planning is also important. You’ better teach students to read the plan and the topic attentively as it’s half of success. It’s not a secret students often can’t manage to finish writing in time. So the other point to teach them is to follow the time and the number of words they should write.
Another question is: Do your students check their papers before they hand them in? From my experience I know it seldom happens, though it may help avoid mistakes or correct them.
What do you do to make your students succeed on exams?
